I recently came across an article about great places to swim around the world and I’m quite the sucker for a warm, clear blue ocean, so I had to share it. The list has 26 destinations, but these are my favorite spots:
For the adventurer: Cayo Coco, CUBA
This Cuban island boasts 20 km worth beautiful beaches along it’s north coast. The beach is not continuous though; they are separated by coral reefs that have now emerged. While they aren’t much fun to step on, if you grab your snorkel gear, reefs are always a great place to find beautifully colored fish and other animals resting in the protection of the coral. Cayo Coco is known for its many resorts, so there are many water sports centers along the way if you decide to go jet skiing or parasailing. I recommend bringing water shoes with you if you plan on walking the full length of the beaches because you will not be able to do so without crossing the reef. Also, for $5 Cuban currency, there is a panoramic bus from the eastern shore to the western. This is a great way to see the beaches from another perspective. Walk there and bus back – how perfect! And if you’ve always wanted to watch a sunrise from the beach, this is your spot! Lastly, even though Cuba is now allowing Americans on the island, travelers should still be aware of their surroundings.
For the partier: Las Vegas, NV, USA
The article lists the Hard Rock Hotel’s Rehab pool, where DJs and celebrities are frequent, but this is a pool I have yet to make it to, even though it has been around the longest. My favorite day-club pool party is Wet Republic at the MGM. There are tons of daybeds and tables for purchase, the bar is even longer than the pool so the wait has never been too long for a drink, and their pool is so big that it doesn’t seem like there is a bad spot to watch whichever high-priced DJ is playing. The best part though is that there are lockers! After you’ve gone through security, you can place your shoes, phones, and other valuables for safe keeping while you party the day away. Just remember to bring money or your flirtation skills, whichever you use to pay for drinks!
Tao Beach at Venetian, Encore Beach Club at Wynn (which becomes the club Surrender by night), and Marquee Dayclub at the Cosmopolitan are other top-notch spots on the Las Vegas strip for 21+ pool parties.
For the thrill-seeker: Marina Bay Sands, SINGAPORE
Not for the faint of heart, this rooftop infinity pool sits on the 57th floor at the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore. Going for a dip in this pool, you can enjoy in a breathtaking sunset and city view like you’re swimming on the Empire State Building looking over New York. Spanning nearly 500 feet across the hotel’s activity area, SkyPark, it is the largest sky-high pool. The hotel opened in 2010, cost $5.7 billion, and rooms start at $389 Singapore dollars and that’s the only way to get access to the exclusive SkyPark and stunning pool.
For the family: Lake Tahoe, CA, USA
Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake (12mi wide, 22mi long) in the United States, with shores in both Nevada and California. Reaching depths of 1,645 feet, this lake is fed from the Sierra Nevadas, so it’s beautiful blue water can be quite cold, yet refreshing on a hot summer day. In the winter, you can go skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer, Tahoe is great for swimming, boating, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Year-round, there is something for everyone when you visit Tahoe.
For the honeymooners: Corfu, GREECE
With swimming, snorkeling, horseback riding, and even speed boat tours, Corfu has it all. If you just want to relax on the beach, Corfu is a great spot to wade in the shallow, crystal-clear waters. This island is full of inlets and secluded beaches along the Ionian Sea. If you want to adventure and learn the culture, Corfu is full of history dating all the way back to Greek mythology, so there are plenty of battle and conquest sites to visit. The hike to Bella Vista truly does provide a “bella vista” – perfect for a newlywed selfie. And the amazing Mediterranean Greek food is always a plus!
