Warm places to spend winter

While some may dream of a white Christmas, others would love to have fun in the sun all year long. MSN Travel came up with a list of the top 10 places to spend winter if you want to keep warm.

  1. Guanacaste, Costa Rica – Average 81°
    • Here you can lounge by the beach or go on a rain forest adventure every day – there is truly something for everyone. Guanacaste is also one of the safest areas in Costa Rica.
  2. Miami, Florida, USA – Average 78°
    • Staying warm and staying within the country is a win-win for Americans. Miami is full of such diverse culture and so much to do that it is a great place to visit year round.
  3. Sydney, Australia – Average 80°
    • Our winter is their summer, so you really can have sun all year round! It’s quite a trek to get to Australia, but once you do, you will be amazed at how different everything -culture, food, animals- is from anything you’ve seen anywhere else. You will definitely want to stay for New Year’s to be one of the first to ring it in and see the firework show from the Harbour Bridge that you’ve grown up seeing on the TV each year.
  4. Auckland, New Zealand – Average 75°
    • There is a variety of shopping, dining, and natural wonders to take your breath away during your time in New Zealand. Getting to Auckland is also easier than ever now due to American Airlines offering daily flights direct from LAX.
  5. Maldives – Average 80°
    • The Maldive Islands are in South Asia surrounded by the warm, crystal-clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. You can relax on the beach, go snorkeling or sailing, or take it all in from your over-water bungalow that nearly every hotel offers.
  6. Puerto Rico – Average 84°
    • Even though Puerto Rico is an American territory, the culture is completely different. There is so much to do and see on this historic island, and once you see it all, you can hop on one of the many cruise ships that are harbored here and explore some of the Caribbean islands. You won’t need a passport to get to Puerto Rico from America, but if you take a cruise, you will need it for re-entry.
  7. Buenos Aires, Argentina – Average 80°
    • Buenos Aires is a city with a very European vibe, so this is a great way to get your dose of Europe in the winter without getting cold.
  8. Rio de Janiero, Brazil – Average 84°
    • Rio is a lovely sea-side city with one of the new 7 Wonders of the World, Christ the Redeemer. While many say it is a very unsafe and poor area, now is the best time to visit before it becomes overrun with tourists surrounding the Olympics in August, which is sure to increase crime.
  9. Nicaragua – Average 83°
    • Similar to Costa Rica, but still under the radar for most travelers, Nicaragua is a perfect destination for the outdoorsy type who would love all of the hiking, biking, and kayaking. The endless sandy beaches also make this a great destination for those who just want to relax with a cocktail and good book.
  10. Penang, Malaysia – Average 86°
    • Heading to Malaysia would be completely opposite of any winter you typically experience in America, but this is a foodie’s destination nestled on the coast of the Malacca Strait. Penang is a modern city that still manages to keep its traditions and old-world charm in tact. If you really want to relax, the spa treatments here are not to be missed.
